Happy Holidays!

Good afternoon,

On behalf of the entire faculty, staff, and administration of Uxbridge High School, we want to wish our extended UHS community, parents, guardians, and friends a very happy and healthy holiday season, hopefully time that will be spent with friends and family alike.

We remind everyone that the building is pretty much closed during the vacation week, and that the high school main office will be closed until the morning of January 3. The gym and locker rooms will be open for practices and games; there are no events or practices on December 28, as the building floors will be cleaned and waxed.

Also, Friday, December 23 is a half-day, with dismissal at 10:30.

Again, from our UHS family to yours, we wish you all a very happy and safe holiday season.

Warmly,

Michael Rubin, Principal
Michael DiMeglio, Assistant Principal

Gingerbread House Competition

What hard work from our Culinary II students this week, as Ms. Dzivasen's classes constructed Gingerbread Houses for competition. The ballots will be counted on 12/23 for both classes, but we wanted to share some of the student products!

Awesome job by both teacher and students alike!

Weekly News & Notes

Good afternoon,
A few updates from UHS:

WINTER SPORTS REGISTRATION
For student-athletes planning on participating in winter sports, this is a reminder that all students must register via FamilyID. The link can be found here. Please make sure that physical examinations are current, and communicate with the nurse for any updates.
HOLIDAY PARTY
The annual UHS Community Holiday Party, with a Peanuts theme, will be held on Friday, December 2, beginning at 5:00 p.m. We ask families to bring donations of unwrapped toys or gifts for either a school or high-school aged student as a donation. We are so proud of the work of our student committee, led by Mr. Silbor and Ms. Wise, and hope that many of you will pass the word along to younger students in the community and their parents, as we showcase the talents and spirit of our very giving town. A video about the event can be viewed here.
REPORT CARDS
First quarter grades were distributed a couple of weeks ago. Please feel free to reach out to counselors or teachers regarding concerns, particularly for students with unanticipated low grades or failures. Teachers have been in contact with parents, are using Google classroom, and have many ways for parents to stay on top of grades and assignments - if you have specific questions, do not hesitate to reach out. We continue to work on ways to be more effective in terms of two-way communication, but obviously need your support.
HALF DAY WEDNESDAY
Just a reminder: Wednesday is a half day, with student dismissal at 10:30 a.m.
THANKSGIVING
The football team faces Northbridge on Thursday, with a 10:15 kickoff at Northbridge Middle School. We hope to see many of you there!

On behalf of the entire faculty, staff, and administration of Uxbridge High School, we wish you and your families a happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday - as we consider the many things for which we are thankful at the onset of this holiday season, we hope that everyone takes pause to think of something for which they are all grateful as well.
Sincerely,

Michael Rubin, Principal
Uxbridge High School

Winter Athletics Registration

Registration for winter sports will open on FamilyID on November 1 and continue until early December; winter practices begin on November 28, 2016. Parents who have already set up a profile need only to log in and register for a winter sport, and parents of students who did not participate in the fall will need to set up a new profile. The online registration link can be found through FamilyID (https://www.familyid.com/organizations/uxbridge-public-schools).
For fee payment, we are offering the opportunity to pay using City Hall Systems, the same payment system utilized by the town.
We have explicit instructions for both Athletic Registration and Online Payment if you have not yet set up an account, which have been emailed home. We tried to make them very detail oriented so that folks would be able to follow them easily. The website also offers customer service; Family ID’s contact information is support@familyid.com (email) and 1-888-800-5583 (phone).
The sites are both very user-friendly, and we know these processes will streamline registration, physical examination eligibility, and user fee payment. Feel free to reach out with any questions!

Football Team Honored by MIAA

On Thursday, October 13, our football team was honored by the MIAA, as District E coordinator Rich Riley spoke with the team regarding leadership and service through sport, presenting the UHS football team with the Educational Athletics Achievement Award for Community Service and Leadership . Earlier this season, the entire Uxbridge team joined the Leicester and Auburn communities at the Top Cop football game, held in honor of a fallen police officer who served both of those communities, Officer Ron Tarentino.

The WBZ report of the event can be viewed here - at the start of the video, you can see the Uxbridge football team in the background.

As the Coach Martelio emphasized at the time, and Mr. Riley reiterated today, there are some lessons that transcend sport and show interscholastic athletics teach lessons that are far more important than wins and losses. We are grateful for the recognition, but also for the attitude and education instilled in our Spartans every day, on and off the field, by our coaching staff and athletic program!

Manufacturing Field Trip

On Wednesday, October 12, several Uxbridge students, accompanied by technology education teacher Mr. Hennessy and guidance counselor Ms. Hampton, attended a field trip sponsored by the Blackstone Valley Education Foundation. About ten students were provided the opportunity to visit with three manufacturing companies in the Blackstone Valley, learning about the skills required to be successful in those environments, the type of work the companies do, and the ideal candidates they look for in prospective applicants.

Some of the quotes from the students:

(Interstate Specialty) "Amazing company and people. They all had great ideas, everyone has input, and it's an awesome environment."
(Package Steel) "I liked how hands on it was. Very nice workers."
(Lampin) "I liked how it was owned by the employees, and how there was a retirement fund."
(Interstate Specialty) "I like the machinery and the atmosphere. I would like to possibly have an internship for this company one day."

The program is coordinated by the Blackstone Valley Educational Foundation in conjunction with the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce. October is Manufacturing Month, enabling schools to visit manufacturing firms with students, specifically focusing on post-secondary opportunities. Uxbridge High School was the first school to participate in this programming this year, and is hoping to host a career day for juniors later this year, again in collaboration with the BVEF and BVCC. When the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce began this program three years ago, the primary objective was to aid manufacturers who are lacking a skilled workforce. We at UHS were happy to assist toward that goal!

UHS on UCTV

Our latest installment of UHS on UCTV, the Spartan Showcase, coordinated and produced by senior Andy Kuros, is up. We are trying to produce a couple of these spots every month.

Parent-Teacher Conferences: Instructions

We are excited to have Parent-Teacher conferences coming up on October 20. The portal for registering for appointments will open on October 13 at 8:00 a.m., and it will close at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 20.
If you wish to schedule an appointment with a teacher but there is no time, or you are unable to make it on the 20th, please select the "call back" option. We will attempt to make sure that all call backs take place within a couple of weeks.
If you set up an account last year, you will have to set up a new account this year, unfortunately. It is easier to have everyone reset than to field calls for password resets, and we find that many of our users change from year to year. Sorry for any inconvenience.

School Appointments - Parent Instructions

1.     Go to our school appointments web site:  http://uxyhs.schoolappointments.com/
2.     Register for an account by clicking the "REGISTER" menu tab and filling in the on-line form.  Choose a user id and password for yourself and then click the "Register Now" button.
3.     Add your children into the system by clicking the "Add a Student" button.  Click "Insert New" button to add more children.
4.    Click the "date" icon beside each child's name to schedule appointments.  Select the staff you wish to book appointments with and the "View Calendars" button.  Use the "Ctrl" or "Command" key to select multiple staff to view at the same time.
5.     Click on available time slots to book your appointments and then click the "Book Appointments" button to save your bookings.
